AI case interview prep: what the tools can and can’t do

A dated comparison of AI case interview prep tools, voice mocks, feedback and pricing, plus where human practice still matters.

Updated

Placement week has a sound: the corridor outside the interview rooms, someone whispering a profitability framework to a closed door, everyone refreshing the shortlist. The candidates who look calm in that corridor are rarely the ones who read the most cases. They are the ones who already said their answers aloud, out of their own mouths, fifty times before the shortlist came out. AI case-prep tools exist to make those fifty reps possible without a partner. Some of the promise is real, some is marketing, and the difference matters when prep hours are scarce.

AI case-prep tools can now run a realistic spoken case, score your answer and drill your weak skills on demand. In India, homegrown tools include CaseCompass, CaseDojo and Northstar, while the global tools charge in dollars, from $4 a case up to $199 a month. What no tool replaces is the pressure of a real interviewer, deep fit-round preparation, or a firm’s own assessment format. Use them for volume and feedback; keep seniors and alums for pressure and polish.

One note before the comparison: this guide is built from each tool’s public pages on 21 October 2026, not from hands-on testing, and prices in this category move fast. Check the linked page before you pay.

So what can AI case-prep tools actually do today?

Four things, and the first two are the real shift from casebooks.

  • Voice mocks. You speak, an AI interviewer runs the case, releases data only when you ask, and pushes back on weak logic. CaseCompass, CaseDojo and Northstar all run spoken interviews; so do the global tools Soreno and CaseWithAI.

  • Instant scored feedback. After the case you get a report scored by skill, often quoting the exact line you said and the minute you said it. That is what a tired case partner at midnight cannot give you consistently during prep season.

  • Drills. Case maths, market sizing, structuring and chart reading as short, repeatable exercises between full cases.

  • Firm-style assessments. Global tools now simulate the screening tests: CaseTutor runs McKinsey Sea Wolf and Red Rock formats and Bain SOVA-style assessments, and Road to Offer offers eight assessment formats. Relevant if you are targeting global offices, not just Indian ones.

Worked example: what a scored report looks like

In the illustrative report example on our homepage, the report shows a score (72 out of 100), a band for each skill, and a note like “You went to costs before checking whether revenue had fallen”, tied to the exact line you said, marked “You said this at 03:42”. That specificity - not the score itself - is what makes the next case better.

What do the tools cost?

From each tool’s own pages. Indian tools first, then the global ones in dollars:

One thing worth saying plainly for an Indian reader: the dollar prices above are US-market prices. Northstar is priced for India, in rupees.

And how does AI practice stack up against the two routes you already have - a case buddy and a coach or senior? The human columns are indicative: any buddy or coach varies with their experience and setup.

The honest version of “one platform that does both”: Northstar covers the reps, the probing and the scoring. What it does not cover is exactly what we tell you to keep humans for - more on that below.

How do you choose?

Four criteria, roughly in the order they matter.

  1. Voice realism. Does the interviewer interrupt, probe and withhold data until you ask, or does it politely answer chat messages? A chat window can discuss a case; it cannot interview you.

  2. Feedback quality. Look for feedback that quotes your own answer and names the fix, not a generic score. This is the single biggest divider between tools.

  3. Case library and calibration. Count, range of case types, and whether cases resemble what your target firms ask. India-calibrated libraries matter: the market sizes, price points and companies should feel like the ones Indian interviewers reach for. CaseDojo positions itself exactly on this.

  4. Price and stage. Interview this week? Put your hours into voice reps, and buy at most one short global plan if you need a specific firm assessment. Two to three months out? A low-cost monthly plan covers your volume. A beginner? Start with structure before paid mocks: our beginner path and framework guides are free.

Is paid prep worth it, or is free enough?

Free takes you some of the way: firm-published sample cases cost nothing, and PrepLounge’s free tier gives you peer mocks with real humans. For AI voice practice with scored feedback, compare access duration as well as price. Northstar’s 30-day unlimited launch offer is ₹499 for verified college students and ₹999 regular, with unlimited access to every case and tool for 30 days. Checkout is closed while payment-provider verification is in progress. See pricing for current availability.

What you pay for, beyond the price, is feedback depth, firm-specific simulation and realism on demand. The case for spending money is narrow and real: a particular firm’s assessment format (CaseTutor, Road to Offer), a much larger global library (Soreno), or a paid month when your interview is close and the free tiers have run out. If you are practising alone, our guide on practising case interviews without a partner covers the free routes in detail.

What can AI not replace?

Three things, and it pays to be blunt about them.

  • Real pressure. An AI does not make your hands sweat. The interviewer who raises an eyebrow and says “are you sure about that number?” is a different nervous-system event, and you should feel it at least once before day zero. Seniors and alums who have sat on the other side of the table are the best source of this.

  • Fit and behavioural judgement. Tools can rehearse your stories, but “why consulting, why this firm, tell me about a conflict” is judged by humans on warmth and credibility. Practise with people who will tell you an answer felt hollow.

  • The firm’s own process. Each firm screens differently at each campus, and simulations only cover the known formats. Always check what your round actually involves this year.

The combined plan that works: AI for volume, humans for pressure and fit.

Where Northstar fits

Northstar is our product, so read this section as a pitch from an interested party. We are voice-first: a live AI interviewer runs the case, hands over data only when you ask, pushes back, and scores the report by skill with quotes from your transcript. As of 22 October 2026, the library holds 271 cases across six types, from profitability to guesstimates. Northstar’s 30-day unlimited launch offer is ₹499 for verified college students and ₹999 regular, with unlimited access to every case and tool for 30 days. Checkout is closed while payment-provider verification is in progress. See pricing for current availability.

Try it

Open a profitability case on Northstar and run it against the four criteria above: does the interviewer push back, does the report quote your own words, does every note name a fix? One case takes about thirty minutes. Northstar’s 30-day unlimited launch offer is ₹499 for verified college students and ₹999 regular, with unlimited access to every case and tool for 30 days. Checkout is closed while payment-provider verification is in progress. See pricing for current availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI replace a case partner completely?

Not completely. AI gives you volume, structure and scoring on demand; a human is still better for real pressure, interruptions and fit-round judgement. Use AI for reps, people for the final polish.

Are there free AI case-prep tools in India?

CaseCompass and CaseDojo listed no paid plans on their sites on 21 October 2026 - check their pages, since pricing in this category moves fast. Firm-published sample cases and PrepLounge’s free tier cost nothing. Northstar’s 30-day unlimited launch offer is ₹499 for verified college students and ₹999 regular, with unlimited access to every case and tool for 30 days. Checkout is closed while payment-provider verification is in progress. See the pricing page for current availability.

How much do AI case-prep tools cost?

As of 21 October 2026: CaseCompass and CaseDojo list no paid plans, and global tools charge in dollars - $4 a case (CaseWithAI), $50 a month (CaseWithAI Focused), $199 a month (Soreno) or $99 for three months (CaseTutor). Northstar’s 30-day unlimited launch offer is ₹499 for verified college students and ₹999 regular, with unlimited access to every case and tool for 30 days. Checkout is closed while payment-provider verification is in progress. See the pricing page for current availability.

Will interviewers know I practised with AI?

They will notice the reps, not the tool. What shows is structure, mental maths and composure under pushback, which is what practice builds. Reciting memorised AI frameworks shows too, and not in a good way.

What should I do in the final week before placements?

Switch from volume to realism: timed voice cases in interview mode, one firm-style assessment if your firm uses one, and at least one session with a senior or alum who interrupts and challenges your recommendation.
