How to get into McKinsey, BCG and Bain
India campus recruiting, assessments, case and fit interviews at McKinsey, BCG and Bain, with official sources and a practical preparation plan.
Updated
Campus placement week. Your friend’s phone lights up with the shortlist. You are not in the room yet, but the people who are did the same preparation you can start tonight.
The short answer: the routes we read in India start with an application, often through a campus calendar, and then case and fit interviews. The firms’ India pages say little about format, so most of the steps below come from their global pages and are labelled that way. McKinsey says Solve is part of the process for most consulting roles, then for most client-facing roles a Personal Experience Interview and a Problem-Solving Interview. BCG’s global page lists a skills interview, a case interview and a team interview for client-facing roles, while its India page describes two rounds of case interviews. Bain says consulting applicants typically do a digital assessment, which some roles and offices require, and then case interviews. Prepare two things well: cases you can solve out loud, and a handful of real stories about your own work.
Built from each firm’s own careers pages, read on 22 October 2026. Processes change by role, school and year, so check the page for yours.
Who gets in the room
Who gets shortlisted? McKinsey says it wants smart, driven problem-solvers from a wide range of disciplines. BCG’s global FAQ says it is not limited to one profile and looks for strong academic performance among students. Bain says it looks for people who are intellectually curious and entrepreneurial and who can explain why they want to join Bain, and its Associate Consultant page asks for educational background and relevant test scores. We found no published cut-off for India, so treat numbers online as unofficial.
In India, campus recruiting matters. Bain’s pages for IIM Bangalore and the Indian School of Business each describe a long tradition of recruiting MBA graduates there, with a dedicated campus team. McKinsey’s India page points students to school pages and campus application deadlines. BCG’s India page says it recruits throughout the year, with deadlines for campuses where it actively recruits listed in its school calendars, and that you may apply to up to three offices at once. Your placement office will have the dates and shortlisting rules for your school, so ask early.
How each firm runs it
Steps marked global come from the firms’ global pages, because their India pages do not describe each step. Details differ by role, so check what your recruiter sends you.
| Firm | Before interviews | Case interview | Fit interview |
|---|---|---|---|
| McKinsey | Application, with campus deadlines on school pages. Solve for most consulting roles (global page) | Problem-Solving Interview: a typical client scenario (global page). Sample cases on its site | Personal Experience Interview: two examples in each of four areas (global page) |
| BCG | Online application, up to three offices (India page, undated). Global page adds a skills interview first | Two rounds of case interviews, based on real projects (India page). Global page: a realistic business problem | Skills interview on experience and motivation, plus a behavioural part (global page). India page mentions personal drive and motivation |
| Bain | Digital assessment where required (Sova or Test Gorilla). No India rule on its pages | Case interview with materials provided. No single “right” answer | Some interviews include behavioural questions. Be ready to say why Bain |
McKinsey
What does McKinsey test first? Solve, a gamified assessment of natural problem-solving. Its page says there is no need to prepare. For most client-facing roles the interviews are a personal experience interview and a problem-solving interview, and some roles add an expertise interview. For the Problem-Solving Interview, McKinsey recommends working through the sample cases on its site, which include their logic and suggested answers. It also says there is no single logical solution, and that you should listen carefully and share a tailored answer, not a standard framework.
For the Personal Experience Interview, McKinsey suggests two personal examples in each of four areas it lists on its interviewing page. Pick experiences that mattered to you, talk about your own role, and lead with your reasoning. It wants a conversation, not a rehearsed story. McKinsey’s India page covers recruiting events, school pages and campus deadlines, but not an India interview format, so the steps above come from its global page. Your recruiter confirms your interview details in advance.
BCG
What does BCG ask? It describes four steps for client-facing roles: application, a skills interview about your experience and motivation, a case interview, and a team interview. In the case interview you work through a realistic business problem: structure your approach, ask questions, analyse data, do quick calculations and pick out the most important factors. BCG says there often is not a single right answer, and that the quality of your reasoning matters most. Its page also quotes an alumna reminding candidates that BCG interviews include a behavioural portion, and that answers should relate back to the requirements of the job.
BCG’s India page describes two rounds of case interviews, with three interviews in the first round and two in the second, based on real projects the interviewer has worked on. That page sits on BCG’s older India site and is undated, and it does not mention the skills or team interviews from the global page, so confirm the current format with your recruiter. We did not find a BCG India page that describes an online test, so ask your placement office or recruiter whether there is one.
Bain
How does Bain screen? For consulting roles it describes a digital assessment and then case interviews. The assessment is required for some roles and offices, and Bain says requirements vary. If you get one, it is Sova or Test Gorilla, takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and calculators are allowed during the assessment but not in later interviews. Bain says it asks every candidate for a role the same questions, to reduce bias, and that it wants to hear why you want to join Bain specifically. Case interviews reward precision and creativity, and Bain provides the materials. We did not find an India-specific interview format on Bain’s pages.
Preparing for the fit round
How many stories do you need? A simple approach for all three firms is to write down six to eight real experiences where you led, handled conflict, failed and recovered, or changed someone’s mind. For each, note the situation, your role, what you did, why you chose it, and what happened. This is our suggestion, not a firm requirement. Then practise saying each one in about two minutes, out loud.
A worked example: one story, two minutes
What does a ready fit answer sound like? Here is an illustration of the shape, not a real candidate and not a firm question. Say you led a four-person team on a college project and a teammate stopped replying. Situation: three weeks to a deadline, one section missing. Role: you were the lead. Action: you called the teammate, learned the work was blocked by a data gap, split the section in two and took the harder half. Why: a rushed reassignment would have cost the team trust. Result: you delivered on time and set a weekly check-in for the rest of the project. Said out loud, it takes about two minutes.
A realistic prep plan
How should you spend the weeks after you get the invitation? This is our suggestion, not a firm’s rule. Adjust it to your time.
| When | Focus | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Structure and maths | Tailored structures, mental maths, chart reading. Draft your stories. |
| Week 2 | Cases out loud | Timed cases, recorded or with a partner. Review each one. |
| Last days | Pressure and fit | Live mocks, your stories at speed, questions for the interviewer. |
With less time, keep the rhythm: a few full cases a week, short daily drills, and one human mock.
What gets candidates cut?
We did not find rejection reasons on any of the firms’ pages we read, so there is no official list to quote.
A note on AI
Can you practise with AI? McKinsey says using AI to practise interview questions or to explain concepts is encouraged, and that generating real-time answers during an interview, or using AI during assessments unless permitted, is not allowed. Bain says AI tools are strictly prohibited during its digital assessment.
Where this road leads
Picture it a few years on. A former teammate now runs a start-up and still picks up when you call. Another moved into investing. None of that is promised by a job. It is the kind of road that opens when you get in, which is why the preparation is worth doing properly.
Practise out loud with Northstar
Northstar is our product, so read this as a pitch from an interested party. Even with a good practice partner, nobody is free at 11 pm. Northstar is a voice agent that runs a case with you out loud: it hands over data only when you ask, pushes back on weak logic and gives you a scored report with the line you said and the minute you said it. It does not run firm assessments such as Solve or the digital tests, so use the firms’ own pages for those. For the case round, you can start with a case or read the Knowledge section.
